Abstract
Politeness is an attitude or behavior that shows respect, attention and appreciation for
other people. Using politeness strategies in communication helps create comfort and
maintain social relationships. In researching politeness strategies, there are several
objects that can be used and one of them in this research is movie. This research aims
to analyze the politeness strategies used by characters in movie and the factors that
influence them. This research is a qualitative descriptive study to describe the
politeness strategies contained in the data source. The data source used is the movie
Mission: Impossible 1 (1996), which is an action movie directed by Brian De Palma.
Then this research used an observation table checklist instrument to collect data. After
the data were obtained and analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory
regarding politeness strategies, the research results were obtained: 1) The characters in
the movie used four politeness strategies, namely positive politeness as the most
dominant strategy, followed by negative politeness, off record politeness and bald on
record politeness. 2) Three factors that influence the use of politeness strategies by
characters are social distance as the most dominant factor, then relative power and size
imposition.
