ARGUMENT STRATEGIES IN MULTIDISCIPLINE RESEARCH ARTICLE DISCUSSIONS PUBLISHED IN INDONESIAN REPUTABLE JOURNALS

Argument strategies are essential in academic writing as they shape how authors
construct, justify, and position their research findings. Understanding these
strategies in Indonesian research article discussions (RADs) is crucial for enhancing
scholarly writing and publication success. This study investigates the argument
strategies used in Science & Technology and Social Sciences & Humanities RADs
published in reputable Indonesian journals and examines disciplinary differences.
A qualitative and quantitative approach was employed, analyzing a corpus of
research articles using move analysis and statistical tests (ANOVA, Cohen’s d) to
compare argument strategy usage. Findings revealed no statistically significant
difference (p = 0.679, Cohen’s d = 0.25) in argument strategies between the two
disciplines. However, qualitative differences indicated Science & Technology
authors favor causal explanations, while Social Sciences & Humanities emphasize
theoretical discussions and comparative analysis. The results suggest that
international academic conventions influence Indonesian research writing,
necessitating discipline-specific writing training.
