Abstract

This research aims to identify and analyze educational values represented in Sing
2, an animated musical film produced by Illumination Entertainment in 2021. The
film tells the story of a group of animal performers striving to stage a show in
Redshore City while encountering various personal and professional challenges.
Using a qualitative content analysis method, the researcher examined the
characters’ dialogues and actions by applying the framework of 18 character
education values established by the Indonesian Ministry of National Education
(2011). The findings reveal that 13 out of 18 values are present in the film:
honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard work, creativity, independence, responsibility,
friendliness, curiosity, social care, peace-loving, rewarding achievement, love of
homeland, and respect. The remaining five values (religious, environmental care,
spirit of nationality, democratic, and joy of reading) were not identified. Their
absence is attributed to the narrative context, character backgrounds, and thematic
focus of the film. This study highlights how popular animated media can serve as
a meaningful vehicle for value-based education. The portrayal of perseverance,
collaboration, and moral development in Sing 2 offers relatable moral lessons for
young audiences, particularly junior high school students. Although the film
carries a PG (Parental Guidance) rating typically intended for children under 12–
13 years old with adult supervision, its themes and messages are more effectively
explored and internalized by junior high school students who are at a
developmental stage better suited for critical reflection and discussion. Educators
may therefore use such media to support character development in the classroom
by integrating value education into engaging learning activities.
