Abstract
This research investigates the types and uses of deixis employed by the main
character, Hiro Hamada, in the animated film Big Hero 6. Utilizing Levinson’s
(1983) theory of pragmatic deixis, the study identifies five main types of deixis:
person, spatial, time, discourse, and social. A qualitative content analysis method
was applied, using the movie script as the primary data source, focusing exclusively
on Hiro’s utterances. data were classified and analyzed using a coding checklist,
then validated through inter-rater The reliability. The findings reveal that person
deixis was the most dominant, with first-person references being the most frequent,
reflecting the character’s internal thoughts and emotional journey. Discourse deixis
was the second most frequent, particularly proximal forms, highlighting Hiro’s
proactive role in advancing the narrative. Spatial, time, and social deixis occurred
less frequently, aligning with the film’s reliance on visual storytelling and its action-
oriented plot. This study fills a gap in pragmatic and media discourse analysis by
offering a character-centered and context-based interpretation of deixis in an
animated film. It demonstrates that deixis plays a critical role not only in dialogue
coherence but also in shaping character identity, emotional expression, and
narrative progression.
