Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze the motivational factors that influence the
2022 batch of non-English education students at Bengkulu University in learning
English. This quantitative research involved 308 students as subjects, using
questionnaires as the main instrument of data collection. Based on descriptive
statistical analysis, the results showed that students' motivation was most strongly
driven by “Need for Cultural Understanding” (Mean total 3.41) and “Career-
Economic Needs” (Mean total 3.31). These two factors significantly ranked at the
top, indicating that the attraction to culture and professional prospects were the
main drivers for students. Meanwhile, the factors “Communication-Affiliation
Needs” “Need for Self-Satisfaction” (Mean total Mean 3.0) were identified as the
factors with the lowest influence, indicating that social-communicative motivation
and intrinsic aspects are not as strong as the other factors. The results of this study
conclude that motivation to learn English in these students is multidimensional,
with the dominance of integrative and instrumental factors. The result provide
important insights for teachers, administrators and policy makers to design curricula
and teaching strategies that can effectively utilize students' dominant motivations
to improve participation and learning outcomes.
