Abstract

This research was a descriptive qualitative study. It was intended to observe,
discover, and evaluate the character education values in reading sections of
English for Nusantara textbook published by the Ministry of Education, Culture,
Research, and Technology 2022. Researcher evaluated the reading materials
regarding to the six pillars of characters by Kemendikbud Ristek (2022), which
comprised (1) Religious, Believe in God the Almighty and virtuous, (2) global
diversity, (3) mutual cooperation, (4) independent, (5) critical thinking, and (6)
creative. The research object was English for Nusantara textbook, specifically the
whole reading materials on that book. The instruments consisted of the researcher
and checklist table. The data were collected through four necessary steps, included
(1) found out all reading materials in the textbook, (2) used the checklist table, (3)
read the texts several times, and (4) identify the reading materials regarding to the
six criteria. The result of this study showed that there were 15 reading materials
found in the textbook, 14 of them have at least 1 character value in it, and 2 out of
15 have 2 character values. In conclusion, five of six pillars of character by Kemendikbud Ristek 2022 were integrated to the textbook, meanwhile Critical
Thinking value was not found. Therefore, the researcher recommends this
textbook to be implemented as the source for reading activities in classroom
interaction to improve the student’s character values.
