AN ANALYSIS OF CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURES IN UPGRADED (2024) MOVIE

This study aims to identify and analyze the types and the functions of
conversational implicatures in Upgraded (2024) movie. The research method used
was descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used instrument of checklist
table of classify the data. The procedures of the data collection in this study
included: downloading the movie, watching the movie until end while writing one
by one the conversation that involved conversational implicature by Grice’s
(1975) theory, analyzing and categorizing the types of conversational implicature
that occurred in the conversation in the movie, Re-watching the movie to make
sure, explaining the meaning and the function based on Brown and Levinson
(1987), and then drawing conclusions from the results. The objects of the research
were all utterances that uttered by the main character and other characters in
Upgraded (2024) movie. The first result of this study showed that there were 59
conversational implicatures, with 18 data of Generalized Conversational
Implicature and 41 data of Particularized Conversational Implicature, These were
influenced by the situational context and interpersonal relationship between the
characters in this movie. Then, the second results of this study showed that the
most frequent function of conversational implicature were Avoiding Direct
Conflict and Solidarity and Closeness, then followed by Request and Command.
This is because the function of implicature in this movie was to maintain positive
relationships with others, particularly in social and personal contexts. This
research suggested that future researchers can use different objects and theories in
the area of implicature.
