Abstract
Although the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is widely studied,
limited research has focused on how English language education students perceive the
use of AI in their language learning process, especially in Indonesia. This gap
highlights the need to explore students’ attitudes, expectations, and challenges in
adopting AI-based tools for English learning in Bengkulu city. This study aims to
explore the AI tools used and the students’ perception regarding the use of AI in English
learning. This study used a quantitative method, which employed a questionnaire that
was filled out by 325 students. The respondents are from the University of Bengkulu,
Muhammadyah Bengkulu University, and the State University of Fatmawati Soekarno
Bengkulu. The data analysis is based on the Humburg formulas. The result showed that
students used several AI in English learning. The most common tool used is ChatGPT
(84%). This study found that students perceive the positive perception in internal and
external factors, with the highest mean score of 3.84 in job relevance and the lowest
mean score of 3.48 in image factor. The study indicates that AI is widely used and
generally well-received by English education students in Bengkulu City. These
findings suggest that lecturers should consider integrating AI more intentionally into
English learning, guiding its ethical and effective use to maximise its educational
benefits.
