Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to explore the teaching strategies used by English
teachers and the challenges they faced in classroom practice at SMPN 3 Bengkulu
City. The study focused on identifying the teaching strategies employed by two
English teachers for grades 7 and 8, and analyzed the obstacles they encountered
during the implementation of these strategies. Data were collected through
documentation, classroom observation, and interviews. The findings indicate that
teachers use a variety of strategies, including direct instruction, inquiry, cooperative
learning, role play, small group discussion, writing, and discussion. However,
several challenges have been identified, such as students' varying ability levels,
students' motivation and behavior in the low grades varies, students lose focus,
limited teaching media and facilities, and language barriers in learning. These
factors often hinder the implementation of more innovative teaching methods. The
results of this study underscore the need for targeted support and professional
development to address these challenges and improve the effectiveness of English
language teaching. This study provides valuable insights for teachers, school
administrators, and policy makers in designing interventions that support the
implementation of effective teaching strategies in resource-limited educational
settings.
