Abstract
Side effects of hypotension or decreased blood pressure when using combination
drugs risperidone and clozapine and risperidone alone in schizophrenia patients.
This study aims to evaluate the side effects of hypotension or lowering blood
pressure when using the combined antipsychotic drugs risperidone and clozapine
and risperidone alone in schizophrenia patients at the Soeprapto Special Mental
Hospital, Bengkulu Province. This study used a descriptive method by examining
drug prescriptions and measuring the blood pressure of hospitalized schizophrenia
patients. The results showed that the majority of patients were 25-34 years old,
59.57%, while 40.43% of patients were 34-44 years old. The majority of patients
(60.54%) took a combination of risperidone and clozapine, while 39.36% of
patients took risperidone alone. After taking the combination of risperidone and
clozapine, 40.36% of patients experienced low blood pressure (<90/60 mmHg), and
59.64% of patients had normal blood pressure (<120/80 mmHg). In contrast, in
patients who took risperidone alone, 5.41% had low blood pressure and 94.59%
had normal blood pressure. No patient experienced high blood pressure. The
conclusion of this study shows that the majority of those using risperidone and
clozapine in combination with risperidone experienced normal blood pressure
(59.64%), while there was low blood pressure (40.46%), and no one had high blood
pressure. Meanwhile, the majority of those using the drug risperidone alone
experienced normal blood pressure (94.59%), while their blood pressure was low
(5.41%), and no one experienced high blood pressure. These findings are important
for clinical considerations in the management of blood pressure in schizophrenic
patients receiving antipsychotic therapy because the combination of these drugs
more often causes hypotension than either drug alone.
