Abstract
Human skin really needs protection, especially protection from sunlight. Sunscreen
is a cosmetic product that has the benefit of protecting human skin from exposure
to sunlight. Whether or not sunscreen is effective when used on human skin is based
on the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value. Efforts to protect human skin from sun
exposure can be done by using several plants that contain antioxidants, such as
herbaceous plant and dodder laurel. The aim of this research is to determine
whether extracts from the herbaceous plant and dodder laurel can be formulated
into cream preparations that meet the test requirements and to find out the best
formulation as a sunscreen cream between the herbaceous plant and the dodder
laurel. This research uses laboratory experimental methods. Herbaceous plant
extract cream and dodder laurel extract cream were each made into 3 formulas with
concentrations of herbaceous plant ethanol extract of 0, 1.15 and 2.3% and dodder
laurel ethanol extract of 0, 1.4 and 2.8%. Then with several evaluations such as
organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, viscosity and SPF. The SPF value is
determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry using the Mansur method. The
research results of the three herbaceous plant extract cream formulas met all the
physical quality test requirements for the cream, the SPF value for formulas 0,
formulas 1 and formulas 2 was 0.647; 2,234; 2,885. The dodder laurel extract
cream did not meet the requirements for the physical quality test of the cream
because in the homogeneity test of the dodder laurel extract cream formulas 1 and
formulas 2 were not homogeneous when the extract was added, the SPF value in
formulas 0, formulas 1 and formulas 2 was 0.632; 2,493; 3,915. The cream that
meets the test requirements is herbaceous plant extract cream, while the dodder
laurel extract cream does not meet it because F1 and F2 are not homogeneous when
the extract is added. The best concentration has potential as a sunscreen in F2
dodder laurel extract 2,8% with an SPF value 3.915.
