Abstract

This research aimed to find out the Difficulties, the reasons, and the dominant
factors in Understanding Listening Section of TOEFL faced by non-English Major
Students of Universitas Bengkulu. The sample of this research were 5th and 7th
semester of non English major students in academic year 2019/2020 who had
taken TOEFL in Lab. Bahasa, FKIP, Universitas Bengkulu. The total sample was
30 students out of 198 students. This research was using descriptive quantitative as
the methodology and the data was collected by using questionnaire as an
instrument. This research used simple statistical (percentage) to analyze the data.
The result showed that the majority of the students had problems in listening
comprehension in 7 aspects. They were the problems related to the content of the
listening, the linguistic feature, by failure to concentrate, the psychological
characteristics, the listener, the speaker and the physical setting. The students
sometimes encounter various kinds of listening problems in TOEFL such as difficult
to get general understanding from the first listening, predict what would come next,
quickly remember, listen without transcripts and difficult to answer questions which
require other than a short answer. The dominant factor was the problem related to
the listener followed by problem related to the content of listening text and the
physical setting in the third position. From the results, it can be concluded that they
have to do more practice because the biggest problems came from themselves.
Keywords: Difficulties, listening comprehension, TOEFL.
