ANALYSIS OF EXPRESSIVE SPEECH ACTS IN THE MOVIE “ENOLA HOLMES 2”

This research aimed to find out the expressive speech acts uttered by the characters
in Enola Holmes 2 movie. The data were taken from the related utterances found in
the dialogues of movie. The data were analyzed by using the expressive speech acts
theory by Searle (1979). The total number of expressive speech acts found in the
Enola Holmes 2 movie was 275 utterances covering 95 utterances of
complimenting, 87 utterances of deploring, 27 utterances of welcoming, 23
utterances of condoling, 20 utterances of thanking, 19 utterances of apologizing, 4
utterances of congratulating. The researcher found that the expressive speech act of
complimenting the most common type of expressive speech act found in the Enola
Holmes 2 movie.
