ANALYSIS OF SLANG WORDS IN ACTION FILMS: 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

This is a descriptive qualitative research that analyzes the types and
the functions of slang words in Film 13 Hours: The Secrets Soldiers of
Benghazi (2016) directed by Michael Bay. After analyzing the film, from 77
slang words found, the most frequent type of slang words was Flippant with
33 (42.85%) occurrences, followed by Clipping with 22 (28.7%), Fresh and
Creative with 22 (19.48%), and Acronym with 4 (5.19%). While Imitative
was not found in the film. In terms of the functions of slang words, the
research collected 102 words in the film. The most frequent function was to
Express Impression with 27 (26.47%) occurrences, followed by Addressing
with 21 (20.58%), Relax Conversation with 16 (15,68%), Showing Intimacy
with 13 (12.74%), Intimate Atmosphere with 10 (9,8%), Reveal Anger with
8 (7,84%), and Humiliating with 7 (6,86%) occurrences. Overall, the data
revealed that the characters utilize a linguistic style characterized by casual,
informal, and shortened language to express his unique opinion of things, as
well as to develop bond among characters.
