Abstract
This study analyzes gender-based language features used by Abz Ali and Nimi
Mehta in The Balance Theory Podcast, applying Jennifer Coates’ (2004)
framework. The first finding reveals that Abz ali predominantly used hedges,
followed by commands and directives, questions, and tag questions. Meanwhile,
compliments and swearing and taboo language appeared less frequently, and
minimal responses were absent. The second finding shows that Nimi Metha most
frequently used hedges, followed by questions, commands and directives, and
compliments, while swearing and taboo language and tag questions were the least
used. Notably, minimal responses were not used at all. The third finding
highlights key differences: Nimi tended to use more compliments and swearing,
reflecting humor and appreciation, while Abz employed more hedges, commands,
and tag questions, showing a reflective and directive style. These results indicate
that although both avoided minimal responses due to the semi-formal format, their
language use reflects distinct strategies shaped by gender, conversational roles,
and personal style.
