Abstract
This study analyzes the use of rhetorical moves in the conclusion sections of ten
selected research articles published in the Journal of English Education and Teaching
(JEET). This study is based on the theoretical framework of Yang and Allison (2003),
which divides rhetorical moves into three main categories: Move 1 (Summarizing the
Study), Move 2 (Evaluating the Study), and Move 3 (Deductions from the Research).
The main objective of this study is to identify the structure and frequency of
occurrence of these moves in JEET articles in order to evaluate how well authors
construct their conclusion sections. This study is qualitative in nature with a
descriptive approach and uses document analysis as a data collection method. Articles
were selected based on the highest number of citations to ensure their relevance and
influence in the field. The results of the study show that Move 1 appears consistently
in all articles, especially in the form of summarizing the findings. However, Moves 2
and 3 are not found evenly, appearing only in half of the total articles analyzed. This
study concludes that although the authors of articles in JEET have demonstrated an
understanding of academic rules in summarizing research results, many of them have
not included an evaluation and application of the results in their conclusions.
Therefore, clearer rhetorical guidelines are needed in academic writing to improve the
quality of the conclusion section in published articles.
