Abstract
The research aimed to find the kinds of metaphor in Phil Collins’ songs and to
interpret the meanings contained in Phil Collins' songs. The method used is a
qualitative method. The object of the research is 30 Phil Collins songs with the
theme of love. The theory used to analyze the data is the classification of metaphors
according to David Crystal (1999). The results of the study show that there are 4
types of metaphors in Phil Collins’ songs: 15 conceptual metaphors, 8 mixed
metaphors, 38 poetic metaphors, 36 conventional metaphors. Metaphorical
interpretations found in Phil Collins’ song are about longing, heartbreak, affections,
disappointment and sadness that occur in relationship. Heartbreak and longing are
the most common metaphors found in this love themed songs.
