Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the teacher’s strategies on teaching
vocabulary to mentally retarded students (SLB-C) at Yayasan Bunga Melur
Bengkulu. Two aspects were investigated in this study; (1) teacher’s strategies on
teaching vocabulary and (2) problems that appears from the implementation of
strategies. This thesis was a descriptive study which does not include any calculation
or statistics procedure. Subjects of the research was english teacher in SLB in junior
high school level. The data in this study were taken by using observation checklist,
interview and field notes. The result of the research shows that teacher’s strategies
were selective material of teaching, break task done into small steps, demonstration
of meaning, contextual meaning, illustration and detailed description, underlining the
difficult words, connect the material to real life, simple practically guided, full of
appreciate, reinforcement and warmth and also friendly and familiar inside or outside
the classroom. The problems that were appear along the implementation of strategies
shows teacher still fluctuation in explanation the material of teaching, time, and
attention to mentally retarded students. On the other hand an half students while in
teaching and learning still passive and low of feedback. At the end with using above
strategies generally can increase students’ development, motivation and teaching
learning result.
