Abstract

This study was a descriptive research. The aim of this study was to
investigate the strategy used by the students in Learning English at the
English Education Study Program of Bengkulu University. The subjects of
the research were 60 students of the English Education Study Program,
consisting of the second, fourth and sixth Semester students, 20 students from
each semester. The data were collected by using questionnaire. The
questionnaire was modified from the Strategy Inventory for Language
Learning or SILL version 7.0 (Oxford, 1990). The results show that the mean
score of Memory Strategies was 3.0 (15.4% of the students sometimes used
memory strategies), the Cognitive Strategies was 2.8 (14.8% of the students
sometimes used cognitive strategies), the Compensation Strategies was 3.5
(17.94% of the students often used Compesation Strategies), the
Metacognitive strategies was 3.7 (18.97% of the students often used
Metacognitive Strategies), the Affective Strategies was 3.3 (16.92% of the
students sometimes used Affective Strategies), and the Social Strategies was
3.2 (16.41% of the students sometimes used Social Strategies. The most
frequent Strategy used by the students was item number 19 which was used
by 75% of the respondents students. In conclusion, the finding indicates that
the English Education Study Program students have applied appropriate
strategies in learning English.
